Robbie Fowler reveals contact with Sven-Goran Eriksson to manage Liverpool in legends game

Robbie Fowler has revealed he has contacted Sven-Goran Eriksson about managing Liverpool in an upcoming charity match.

Eriksson announced last week he has been diagnosed with cancer, sadly admitting he has “best case a year” left to live.

The 75-year-old enjoyed a thoroughly successful career in the game, most famously winning Serie A and two Coppa Italia titles with a talented Lazio team at the turn of the 21st century, before becoming England’s first ever foreign manager – leading the nation’s ‘golden generation’ at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as Euro 2004.

In a recent interview with Sky News, Eriksson admitted the one regret of his career was not having the opportunity to manage his favourite club Liverpool, stating: “My father is still a supporter and I am a Liverpool supporter too, always have been.

“So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool and that will not happen, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”

Eriksson’s utterance about Liverpool has seen many fans take to social media to call for the ex-England head coach to manage a team of Reds legends in a clash with Ajax at Anfield on March 23.

Fowler, who will feature for Liverpool’s legends in that game, revealed on X he has reached out to Eriksson about potentially leading the Reds out at Anfield during the friendly, writing “calls gone in mate” under a post about the manager.

The game between Liverpool and Ajax legends is the eighth charity match played at Anfield to raise funds for the LFC Foundation, with 100% of the proceeds going to the foundation and its charity partners.
