Steve Clarke provides Andy Robertson update after shoulder injury on Scotland duty

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has confirmed left-back Andy Robertson suffered a shoulder injury during his side’s defeat to Spain on Thursday.

Robertson was in obvious pain as he hit the turf shortly before half-time in the 2-0 defeat and left the field using his shirt as a makeshift sling to support his arm.

The left-back will now return to Liverpool for further checks on his injury, with Clarke unsure of the severity of Robertson’s issue.

“It was an immediate decision to take him off, he’ll go back to his club, he’ll be assessed,” Clarke said.

“Obviously he’s hurt his shoulder. We’ll have a look, obviously go back to his club. Always seems to happens when you lose one player in a position: we lose Kieran [Tierney] on the left side and then Andy’s picked up a shoulder injury.

“We’ll see how it is, see how it settles down and hopefully he’s good for his club as quickly as possible and he’s ready to help us in November.”

Liverpool fans will be sweating over the results of Robertson’s scans, with dislocation injuries requiring vastly different recovery periods depending on the severity.

Robertson may need just a matter of weeks to heal but would obviously remain sidelined for several months if surgery is required.

The immediate concern for Liverpool fans is the upcoming Merseyside derby. Everton will head to Anfield on October 21 and, as it stands, Jurgen Klopp may have to turn to Kostas Tsimikas to cover for the injured Scot.

A trip to Manchester City is also on the cards for November 25 and Liverpool will also face Manchester United on December 16.
