With Erling Haaland dominating teams across the land and midfield picks looking as strong as ever, it’s a real head scratching exercise when it comes to sorting out your forward line on FPL. 3-5-2 is the go-to formation for many, so it’s hugely important to get the Norwegian’s deputy spot on.
We’ve picked out the top forwards for the 2023/24 edition in conjunction withFantasy Football Hub’s powerful AI Points Predictions, showing the standout predicted points over the first fourgameweeks of the season.
1 Erling Haaland (£14.0m) – 33.9 Predicted Points
We’ll address the obvious thing first – Erling Haaland is most likely going to be in your team and there’s no point trying to get away from it. He broke the Premier League goalscoring record last season and has seen his price hiked by £2.5m as a result.
But with 36 goals under his belt, in a Manchester City side playing dreamy football, Haaland could improve on that figure, and he’s a shoo-in to be many people’s captain. With Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan out of the equation too, the chances of him assuming full time penalties are pretty high.
2 Darwin Nunez (£8.0m) – 16.6 Predicted Points
Liverpool’s 2022/23 campaign was blighted by injuries up front, but things look to be a whole lot rosier for Jurgen Klopp heading into the new season.
Darwin Nunez has been handed by the number nine shirt by the Reds, potentially signalling he’ll be fighting Cody Gakpo for a starting berth through the middle, and the Uruguayan now has a year of Premier League football under his belt.
Nunez could profit from the return to fitness of Luis Diaz and alongside Mohamed Salah, he’s a good bet to open his goalscoring account in the opening few weeks – Liverpool have Bournemouth and Wolves in their first five games.
3 Yoane Wissa (£6.0m) – 16.4 Predicted Points
Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has the chance to fill Ivan Toney’s sizeable shoes up front, with the Bees hoping they won’t need to dip into the market to replace their talisman.
Wissa managed three attacking returns in the three games Toney missed at the end of last season, and has followed up those displays with some impressive pre-season showings. Brentford have three home games in their first four, adding further weight to picking Wissa.
4 Ollie Watkins (£8.0m) – 19.8 Predicted Points
Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is one of the most consistent forwards in the game, scoring over ten goals in each of his three seasons in the Premier League. Only Haaland, Toney and Harry Kane scored more fantasy points among forwards last season.
Watkins can blow a bit hot and cold – going through patches of blistering form before hitting dry spells – and the concern is that Villa’s workload, which includes Europa Conference League football this season, could affect his output.
Nevertheless, Watkins’ numbers speak for themselves and he shouldn’t be discarded despite Villa opening up with three away games in four.
5 Callum Wilson (£8.0m) – 20.4 Predicted Points
Callum Wilson was one of the top performing players in the final ten gameweeks of last season, bagging 13 goal involvements to fire Newcastle into the Champions League.
The 31-year-old has Alexander Isak for competition up front – with Harvey Barnes likely to play on the left after joining from Leicester – and that could affect his points haul this season. Throw in some tricky fixtures in the first weeks and you might question why Wilson is tipped as a hot pick.
But overlook his consistency at your peril – Wilson offers a threat even if he’s coming off the bench and his minutes shouldn’t diminish too much as Newcastle juggle playing in Europe.
AI Predicted Points
It comes as no surprise to see the AI algorithm favouring Haaland as the top early season pick. Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£7.5m) are also backed to do well, though their futures at Tottenham and Fulham remain up in the air.
Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku (£7.5m) would have potentially been a shrewd pick, but his recent knee surgery rules him out of action until December. Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) is actually struggling with injury and that makes the aforementioned Alexander Isak (£7.5m) the next best cab on the rank.
