Top 90: The best players in the Premier League

It’s fairly common knowledge at this point that the Premier League is, by quite a distance, the best league in the world.

The league is home to the European champions, teams who can spend a combined £1.5bn on new players this summer, the best manager possibly of all time (Pep Guardiola), and – perhaps most importantly – the best footballers in the world.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season we at 90min thought we’d have a crack at predicting who the top 90 players will be in the Premier League next season.

Here’s the rankings from 70-61:

Bentancur is set to return soon

Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Position: Midfielder

The term ‘Rolls Royce of a [insert position here]’ is bandied around way too much in football, but it is hard to write about Rodrigo Bentancur and not call him a ‘Rolls Royce of a midfielder’.

When back from injury – likely in September – the Uruguayan will become a key member of Ange Postecoglou’s starting lineup.

Robertson is a consistent performer

Club: Liverpool
Position: Defender

One of the most consistent performers in the Premier League since he rocked up at Liverpool for just £8m back in 2017.

Robertson will continue to put in solid performances for Jurgen Klopp for the foreseeable future.

A breakout star last season

Club: Brighton and Hove Albion
Position: Wide forward

Hands up who thought Kaoru Mitoma was going to be the breakout star of the 2022/23 season?

Put your hands down, you’re only lying to yourselves.

Mitoma shocked everyone by being bloody brilliant last year and he’ll continue to do so during the upcoming campaign too.

Ramsdale is solid performer

Club: Arsenal
Position: Goalkeeper

There are question marks regarding his long-term future as the Arsenal number one, but it’s hard to deny that Aaron Ramsdale isn’t a very, very good goalkeeper.

Just watch his performance at Anfield again if you’re questioning the above statement.

A modern goalkeeper

Club: Brentford
Position: Goalkeeper

The man who could replace Ramsdale at Arsenal.

Regardless of which Premier League club David Raya plays for next season he’ll be one of the better goalkeepers in the division. He’s the archetypal modern goalie.

Club: Chelsea
Position: Forward

It’s fair to say that Nicolas Jackson has made an impression during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA.

He’s brimming with confidence head into his maiden Premier League campaign.

Big signing for Tottenham

Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Position: Midfielder

Regardless of Leicester City’s relegation, every single person in the world knew that James Maddison would not be playing Championship football during the 2023/24 season.

Following relegation, Maddison was sharply snapped up by Tottenham for a reasonable £40m.

There will be at least ten games during the upcoming season in which Maddison will look like the best player in the league, it remains to be seen how he performs in the other 28 league games however.

The sky is the limit

Club: Liverpool
Position: Midfielder

While football journalists up and down the country try to learn how to spell his name, Dominik Szoboszlai will also be learning how to play in Jurgen Klopp’s system.

It may take time for the Hungarian to adjust to the physical demands of playing midfield for the Reds but once he does the sky is limit for him.

Nunez is the new number nine

Club: Liverpool
Position: Forward

The new number nine? Yes.

The player who is actually going to start up front for Liverpool? Judging by Cody Gakpo’s form at the tail-end of the 2022/23 campaign, probably not.

However, that doesn’t mean he won’t contribute when he does get minutes for the Reds.

A key player for Newcastle

Club: Newcastle United
Position: Midfielder

Newcastle United’s recent signing of AC Milan superstar Sandro Tonali may hinder other midfielders game time next season, but we doubt it will have an impact on Joelinton’s minutes.

The Brazilian is the lungs of Newcastle’s midfield. The sort of player every fan wants at their club.
