Vancouver Whitecaps re-sign Sebastian Berhalter to two-year contract

Vancouver Whitecaps have re-signed midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to a two-year contract, extending his stay with the Canadian side through the 2025 MLS season.

Berhalter, the son of US men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter, joined Vancouver ahead of the 2022 campaign in a trade with Columbus Crew and has since made 57 appearances (27 starts) across all competitions for the Whitecaps. The new deal also contains a club option through 2026.

The 2023 season was a time of growth for the 22-year-old, as he made 37 appearances (16 starts) across all competitions to score two goals and dish out two assists.

“Sebastian has continued to make tremendous strides since joining our club in February 2022 and especially in the last season,” said Vanoucer sporting director Axel Schuster in a release.

“Still only 22, Sebastian has shown to be a key piece in our group with a willingness to contribute wherever needed. He is very mature for his age, works extremely hard and will always push himself to be better. We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement and we now look forward to seeing him continue his development as he helps us achieve our goals in the coming years.”

Berhalter has added two trophies along the way with the Western Conference club, as he was part of the 2022 and 2023 sides that conquered the Canadian Championships in both years. Berhalter made nine appearances with the Crew before being sent out on loan to Austin FC before being integrated into Vanni Sartini’s first-team squad in 2022 via the trade.

“Thank you to Axel, Vanni (Sartini), and Quinn (Thompson) for this opportunity,” said Berhalter. “I’m excited to help the club compete for trophies and can’t wait to be back in front of our fans!”
