Women’s World Cup fixtures today

The final week of group games at the 2023 Women’s World Cup is underway and Groups D and E will reach their conclusions on Tuesday.

It’s been a tournament of upsets and unpredictability thus far, although the current World and European champions will each be looking to avoid such variance by winning their final group game and progress into the next phase as group winners.

The United States still have a bit of work to do if they’re to top Group E, while England’s steadiness should be enough to see them win Group D.

Here’s everything you need to know about another intriguing day of WWC action.

A draw against the United States in their second group encounter has left the Netherlands in a position of strength heading into their final Group E clash after they had already edged out fellow Europeans Portugal on matchday one of the group.

The Dutch sit level with the US on four points, although a commanding victory against the lowly ranked Vietnam could send them through as group winners even if the Americans also get the job done against Portugal.

It was always going to be an impossible task for Vietnam to progress into the last 16 given the calibre of opposition they were pitted against. But they’ll be hoping to end their campaign with at least a goal in their final match. They’ve so far been beaten 3-0 and 2-0 by the US and Portugal respectively.

The more intriguing Group E bout arrives in Wellington as the world’s number one ranked outfit, the United States, take on a Portugal side bouyed by their efforts on matchday two of the group.

Sure, it was only Vietnam, but that victory ended a five-game winless run.

Nevertheless, they have a mammoth task ahead of them to progress into the knockout stages. The Americans are a point ahead, so Portugal must beat the current holders to sail through. Vlatko Andonovski’s side certainly haven’t been at their best Down Under, but they’re still heavily favoured.

However, they do risk missing out on top spot should they not win handsomely on Tuesday.

1-0 to the England!

Back-to-back 1-0 triumphs means a point on Tuesday against China will guarantee the Lionesses both progress to the knockout rounds, as well as top spot in Group D. There were more positives for Sarina Wiegman after Lauren James inspired her side to three points against Denmark when it was revealed that Keira Walsh had not sustained a major knee injury.

The midfielder will remain with the squad, but she isn’t available for Tuesday’s game against the current Asian champions.

The unpredictable Chinese have so far underwhelmed at the tournament, and they may not even progress into the last 16 should they beat the European champions in Adelaide. A 1-0 win over Haiti leaves them on three points with England leading the way on six. However, with Denmark expected to beat Haiti, China will likely have to beat the Lionesses by at least a couple of goals to advance.

Haiti’s stubbornness has frustrated both England and China so far at the tournament, with Denmark needing a victory on matchday three of Group D to secure their place in the next phase.

The Danes’ defeat to England last time out has them on three points and level with China in the current group standings. However, China’s final encounter against the Lionesses leaves Denmark in a stronger position with regard to qualification.

While Haiti have proven their competence, Denmark will be fancied to get the job done and book their place in the last 16. Should they be held, they’ll be hoping England do them a favour in Adelaide.
