X reacts as Newcastle hammer Sunderland in FA Cup Tyne-Wear derby

Newcastle United ran out emphatic winners in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, the Magpies winning 3-0 in the FA Cup third round.

Alexander Isak’s second-half brace added to an own goal from Daniel Ballard in the first half to give Newcastle a comfortable victory at the Stadium of Light, taking the bragging rights back to Tyneside and securing their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Sunderland and Newcastle hadn’t met since 2016, with expectations high for a bumper Tyne-Wear derby in the FA Cup. The atmosphere was always going too be electric at the Stadium of Light, both sides desperate for the bragging rights come full-time.

While no major openings in the first 25 minutes at the Stadium of Light, there were still plenty of fiery tackles for fans to feast their eyes on.

Both sides were flying into challenges, and with no VAR to spoil things, every tackle was met with passionate roars from both sets of supporters – and social media, of course.

Newcastle eventually did take the lead with the first real chance of the game, although it was Ballard – who perhaps could have been sent off minutes earlier for denying Isak a goalscoring opportunity – who put into his own net.

Joelinton raced away down the left-hand side for the visitors, delivering a tempting ball across the face of the Sunderland goal. Unfortunately for Ballard, he could only redirect the Brazilian’s cross into Anthony Patterson’s top corner.

The Black Cats would have been hoping for a more promising second half, but they made a nightmare start after the break. Pierre Ekwah was robbed of the ball in his own penalty area, with Isak converting Miguel Almiron’s cutback to double Newcastle’s lead.

Disaster for the 21-year-old.

Isak then scored a late penalty for the visiting Magpies as a sorry Sunderland were forced to lick their wounds.

In the end, it proved a mighty mismatch at the Stadium of Light, hardly surprising given the financial gulf between the two clubs.
