Carla Bruni reveals she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 – and only regular checks saved her from having a mastectomy

Former supermodel and French first lady Carla Bruni has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that only by having regular checks was she saved from having a mastectomy.

In a moving Instagram post on Wednesday, the 55-year-old said she was diagnosed with the disease in 2019.

It was a time when she was under considerable stress because her husband, former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, 68, was fighting corruption charges that saw him convicted twice in a criminal court.

‘Four years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer,’ Ms Bruni says in a video.

‘Surgery, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, I follow the usual path to treat this type of cancer. But I was lucky – my cancer was not yet aggressive. Why was this cancer not aggressive? It’s because it didn’t have time to become so’.

Promoting Pink October – when women are encouraged to go for tests – Ms Bruni said: ‘Because every year, on the same date, I have a mammogram. If I hadn’t done this every year, I wouldn’t have a left breast today.

‘I am not posting this to give you the details of my health. This disgusts me and I hesitated for a long time before speaking.

‘No, if I am posting this today because I have a single message to deliver. It’s a fundamental message for all the women who follow me – get your mammograms every year.’

Ms Bruni concludes the post by saying: ‘Get your mammograms – it’s about your life.’

Beyond her husband’s ongoing legal troubles, Ms Bruni was particularly upset last year following thedeath of her friend Tatjana Patitz, the German model who died of breast cancer at the age of 56.

Ms Bruni, a mother of two, has also spoken about her battles against alcohol, cigarettes and sugar.

She said in January: ‘I suffered from all the addictions. I had to drink 30 or 40 Coca-Colas a day.’

Ms Bruni also started smoking heavily as a teenager, and used to ‘drown myself every day’ in alcohol.

Following a highly successful career as a supermodel, Italy-born Ms Bruni became Mr Sarkozy’s third wife in 2008, just after his election.

She now lives in Paris with Mr Sarkozy, who remains on unconditional bail as he appeals against two criminal convictions that included custodial sentences.

Further enquiries into his affairs are ongoing, and he is set to go on trial over a ‘corruption pact’ which allegedly saw him receive millions of dollars from Colonel Gaddafi.

The explosive legal process will see Sarkozy face up to charges that he accepted the equivalent of at least £42million in cash from the late Libyan dictator to fund his election campaign.
