Usman Khawaja’s request to feature a peace symbol on his bat and shoes for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Pakistan has been denied amid the ongoing ‘gesture’ controversy. Despite engaging in discussions with Cricket Australia to find an appropriate message, the International Cricket Committee (ICC) reportedly rejected Khawaja’s latest humanitarian gesture. This development follows a previous incident where Khawaja was not allowed to wear shoes with slogans related to human rights during the first Test in Perth, citing ICC rules against messages related to politics, religion, or race.
In expressing his support for the people of Gaza, Khawaja had worn a black armband during the match, leading to a reprimand from the ICC. Despite the setback, Khawaja remains steadfast in his commitment to raising awareness about issues he feels passionately about, including the Israel-Hamas conflict and its impact on children. As of now, the ICC has not officially commented on the matter.

Additionally, Usman Khawaja’s fresh application to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to wear a humanitarian logo, featuring the image of a black dove holding an olive branch on his shoes for the upcoming Boxing Day Test, has also been denied. Khawaja, who spoke on Friday about the emotional impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict, emphasized his sincere intentions in shedding light on the humanitarian crisis, particularly the loss of innocent lives in Gaza. Despite facing challenges in expressing his sentiments through cricketing attire, Khawaja remains resolute in his dedication to raising awareness about causes he deeply cares about. The ICC is yet to provide an official comment on this recent development.
Khawaja spoke on Friday about how the Israel-Hamas conflict had affected him, saying he despaired at seeing how many children had been killed.
“When I’m looking at my Instagram and seeing innocent kids, videos of them dying, passing away, that’s what hit me the hardest,” he said.
“I don’t have any agendas other than trying to shine a light on what I feel really passionately, really strongly about.”
