Previously in Chapter 86
In the following chapter, after all this time has passed, Nabata finally recognizes Rintaro and addresses him by name. But the fact that he has forgotten everything about her and is asking if she is familiar is something she has come to expect, and she tells him as much.
We see this in Rintaro’s mind when she introduces herself to him as Satsuki Nabata and says that they were seat neighbors for roughly a term in their third year of middle school.
Rintaro, speaking to himself, adds that he recognizes the name but that the woman in question doesn’t resemble the one he remembers. He adds that he was completely oblivious to his environment at the time, and that the only way he might remember her now is to look at their high school yearbook photos.
Nabata, however, insists that he need not express regret because she shares his opinion that she has grown and evolved tremendously since then. She adds that the same is true of him, and he agrees. In addition, he expresses his astonishment that she recognized him despite the fact that he had altered his hairdo and color since then.
Rintaro goes on to remark that she has completely shocked him since, after all the trouble he had in middle school, he never thought he’d hear from a classmate again. She tells him that she doesn’t really need anything, but that she just wants to talk to him because the memories are making her nostalgic. After telling him that he may have been late because of her, she leaves. Here, we hear Rintaro admit that the news came as a complete surprise to him.
