A Labour MP is being offered enhanced security because he is married to an Israeli who has served in the military, The Mail on Sunday understands.
Damien Egan, who overturned a large Conservative majority in the Kingswood by-election last Thursday, has been subject to abuse from pro-Palestine extremists since appearing at the election count with husband Yossi Felberbaum. Mr Felberbaum served in the Israeli army before he moved to the UK.
Following other incidents of intimidation of MPs, including that which prompted Tory Minister Mike Freer’s decision to step down from politics, the parliamentary authorities are to hold talks with Mr Egan over his protection.
Mike Katz, national chairman of the Jewish Labour Movement, said: ‘It’s disgusting that a new MP’s husband is targeted by Left-wing trolls, using the worst conspiratorial Left anti-Semitism, simply because he once served in the Israeli army. It’s racism.’

Among those attacking Mr Egan’s husband on social media is the pro-Palestine rapper Lowkey, who posted on X/Twitter: ‘Israeli soldier Yossi Felberbaum actively recruits for the infamous Israeli military intelligence Unit 8200. It spies on Palestinian electronic communications for the purpose of blackmail and secret evidence.’
One social media user responded: ‘How are we going to stop this, Lowkey? ‘
Other users claimed that Mr Egan’s selection as Labour candidate was a sign that the party was controlled by Mossad.
Like most Israelis, Mr Felberbaum, who was born near the city of Haifa, did his military service before completing a further spell working in the intelligence unit.
Mr Egan was born in Cork before moving with his family as a child to live in the Kingswood constituency.
