For the first time, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is organizing a mixed team event, the Mixed Team World Cup, from December 4 to 10, 2023. The new event will be held in Chengdu, China, and will feature the world’s top 18 table tennis teams. This will mark the return of the World Cup, which hasn’t been held since 2020. Unlike previous formats, the event will combine men’s and women’s players on the same teams.
In this tournament, the teams will be split into groups – four teams in two groups and five teams in the other two groups. The matches in the first round will take place over two days. The top two teams from each group will move on to a final round-robin stage. In this stage, results from some earlier matches will be counted. The team that tops the table in this final stage will win the World Cup.
Each team consists of three or four male and female players. The matches will begin with mixed doubles which will then be followed by one women’s and one men’s singles match. If needed, there will also be women’s and men’s doubles matches. The order of these matches is chosen by the lower-ranked team’s captain.
Each match at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2023 will be played best of three games, with results being either 3-0 or 2-1 in games. A team needs to win eight games to win the match. For the first time in such an event, players will earn individual world ranking points based on how they perform, with a total of 1,000 points available for the winning team’s players.
When and Where to watch the event?
