Previously in Chapter 40
Heesoo confides in Saeah that she had to constantly bother her grandpa before he finally agreed to help. The constant nagging from Heesoo became too much for Saeah to bear, so she just thanked her for her efforts up to that point and stormed out of the classroom. Anger over Saeah’s disobedience causes Heesoo’s mood to abruptly shift.
After Heesoo insults Saeah, she gets herself together and decides to spend the night at the gift hall. She chooses a journalist to accompany her on her visit to the gift hall, and she smiles menacingly as she plans to broadcast Saeah’s humiliation when she receives an F-grade gift (this won’t go down well with Heesoo).
In the meanwhile, Saeah retreats to the bathroom to contemplate Heesoo’s manipulative intentions. She remembers when she overheard Heesoo complaining to her friends about how she was trying to use Saeah for her family’s journalism business. Heesoo only wants Saeah to plunge further into the abyss for the sake of her fame.
Heesoo may seem kind on the outside, but she really only wants Saeah to receive an F-grade present so she can watch her reaction. Saeah was shocked to hear that her best friend was actually someone who wished to take advantage of her. Concerned that she would receive a failing mark, Saeah began to feel apprehensive.
Returning to the gift room, Saeah contemplates the wishing area and decides that an F-grade present would send her plunging into an existential crisis. Knowing that there may be others like Heesoo in her vicinity, Saeah implores the gift-giving machine to bestow a positive gift onto her. A brilliant red light emanates from the Machine, revealing Saeah’s gift; nonetheless, her expression betrays her disappointment.
