Moment rats scurry outside infested block of flats as ‘petrified’ tenants claim they can’t leave their homes when it gets dark

This is the moment rats are seen scurrying outside an infested block of flats in Liverpool, leaving residents ‘petrified’.

Tenants Eve Bradley and Eireann Dobbins say they can’t go outside in the dark without rats running over their feet.

The pair moved into the flat, on Vine Street, Liverpool city centre, five months ago and saw a few dead rats outside when they arrived.

‘We thought it was a one off and then it wasn’t until we went out at night that we realised how bad the situation was,’ Ms Bradley said.

Videos show several rodents scurrying around outside the apartment block and hiding underneath plants.

Ms Bradley, from Derry, Northern Ireland, told the Liverpool Echo: ‘You can’t leave your flat when it does start to go dark without them running across your feet.

‘It’s getting dark earlier – they’re going to start coming out earlier and earlier.’

The 22-year-old said that one of the girls she lives with was was once in the lift with one of the rats – which she hadn’t seen until the lift was moving.

‘It causes us so much distress,’ Ms Bradley, a third year student at Liverpool John Moores University, said. ‘I’m literally petrified of them.’

She said she had seen one or two dead rats upon moving in but ‘didn’t think anything of it’.

‘We thought it was a one off and then it wasn’t until we went out at night that we realised how bad the situation was,’ she added.

Ms Bradley said she has reported the problem to housing provider Urban Sleep – who claim it is a ‘city-wide’ issue and that they are speaking with the council to find a solution.

A spokesperson for Urban Sleep said it was working with the tenants to try and find a solution, while Ms Bradley said she has suggested the bins be moved underground.

She said: ‘We suggested to the company that the bins could be moved underground. There’s an underground car park.

‘I’ve lived in town in student accommodation and this was never an issue. The bins were underground and we never saw any rats.’

Liverpool City Council said weekly waste collection is carried out by Liverpool Streetscene Services Ltd (LSSL) each Wednesday, with recycling picked up once a fortnight. The council added that it had arranged for all bins to be emptied on Friday after being contacted.

MailOnline has approached both Urban Sleep and Liverpool City Council for comment.
