Southeast Georgia schools to close Tuesday due to severe weather; Duval County considers closing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Due to the threat of severe weather, all 12 Ware County Schools will be closed to staff and students on Tuesday, the school district announced on Monday. Glynn County Schools and Brantley County Schools also announced campuses will close due to the threat of severe weather, high winds, power outages, tornadoes and possible road and bridge closures.

“The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. We will keep you abreast of any new information as it becomes available. Please continue to monitor your email, GCS social media, and GCS website for alerts and updates,” Glynn County Schools wrote in a 2 p.m. announcement.

Storms will begin to move in late Monday, primarily for Georgia, and the storm risk for Monday night is non-severe.

Duval County Public Schools said it is monitoring weather reports and is in conversations with Jacksonville leaders. An update regarding the opening of schools will be available at or before 5 p.m., DCPS said.

The Columbia County School District plans to have school but said there may be a delay in dismissal.

“The Columbia County School District has been in contact with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville through our local Emergency Management Office regarding the weather impacts for tomorrow. A large squall line will be moving into our area tomorrow afternoon. The primary time frame for impact is the noon – sunset time frame. We will have school tomorrow as normal, but there may be a delay in the dismissal of all students. We will give further updates tomorrow as needed. Thank you for your consideration,” the school district said in a Facebook post.

According to the NWS, the isolated strong-to-severe storms will bring the threat of heavy downpours, tornadoes, and small hail from noon to sunset on Tuesday.
