Ubisoft Addresses Unintended Assassin’s Creed In-Game Black Friday Ads

Ubisoft found itself in a bit of a whoopsie as players in Assassin’s Creed stumbled upon surprise ads for their Black Friday deals. It wasn’t on purpose, Ubisoft says. A player posted a video on Reddit and Twitter showing the game map getting interrupted by an ad for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, now 20% off. Ubisoft insists it was a “technical error” and not a sneaky ad move. They quickly fixed it. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a smaller-scale game, takes a break from the big maps of its pals. Ubisoft aims to keep gamers happy, glitches aside. Ubisoft Addresses Unintended Assassin’s Creed In-Game Black Friday Ads

The incident came to light when a Reddit user, triddell24, shared a video capturing the in-game advert. The video, also shared on Twitter by Fab_XS, depicts a player attempting to access the map in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. However, instead of the expected map interface, the screen is inundated with an advertisement for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, offering a tempting 20% discount as part of the Black Friday sales.

The ad encourages players to “Take advantage of 20% off on the latest game in the series,” providing options to either close the advert or “buy now,” presumably leading to a link directing to the console’s store.

Ubisoft’s Response: A Technical Error

In response to the unexpected in-game advertisements, Ubisoft quickly addressed the situation, asserting that these ads were not part of a deliberate marketing strategy but were instead the outcome of a ‘technical error.’

“We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday,” stated a Ubisoft spokesperson to IGN. “This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we learned of the issue.” Unfortunately, the developer did not delve into specifics regarding the nature of the technical glitch.

About Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed Mirage, launched on October 5, represents a departure from the expansive, open-world design of its predecessors. It takes a smaller-scale approach, harking back to the series’ roots with a focus on slower-paced, stealth-based gameplay. Unlike the role-playing game elements found in Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Mirage offers a more condensed experience, with a map significantly smaller than its predecessors. Completing the game requires approximately 20 to 30 hours, a notable contrast to the extensive gameplay hours demanded by earlier titles in the series.

While the in-game Black Friday ads may have surprised and even frustrated some players, Ubisoft assures the gaming community that it was an unintended glitch. As the gaming world eagerly awaits the next installment, Assassin’s Creed Red, recent leaks indicate a potential shift in the game’s direction. Ubisoft remains at the forefront of the gaming industry, continuously evolving its iconic franchise to meet the expectations of its dedicated fan base.
