Westfield stabbing: Woman knifed at Belconnen shopping centre

A woman has been stabbed after a terrifying carjacking in a busy shopping centre carpark, a court has heard.

Trong Nguyen, 26, was refused bail after he allegedly attacked a shopper with a knife before driving away in her ute from Westfield Belconnen, in the ACT at 11.30am on Sunday.


Court documents said the woman was about to get into her vehicle when she heard someone running behind her.

Nguyen allegedly lunged at a woman with the blade, cutting her arm. She threw away her keys and the alleged thief grabbed them before driving off. 

The woman was rushed to hospital with a single stab wound.

ACT police spotted the alleged attacker driving the stolen vehicle in Braddon at 11.50am and pursued him.

He was arrested in Ainslie a short time later after a short foot pursuit.

Nguyen was charged with eight offences and denied bail when he appeared in court on Monday.


ACCT Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker described Nguyen as ‘a significant risk tot he community’.

The charges included including aggravated robbery, intentionally wound a person, knife possession, two counts of failing to stop for police, two counts of dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
