What did Mauricio Pochettino say about 21 minutes of total added time?

Chelsea overcame Tottenham Hotspur in an entertaining London derby after the match was filled with debatable decisions. In the end-to-end game, the Blues prevailed 4-1 to secure a much-needed victory. While the scoreline might make it seem like a comfortable win for Chelsea but the reality was far from it. Tottenham started well and even took the lead through Dejan Kulusevski. However, things went out of control after that. There were disallowed goals and VAR controversies in the remainder of the game.

Not to mention that two Tottenham Hotspur players received red cards – Cuti Romero and Destiny Udogie. Despite playing against nine men, Chelsea had to dig deep to get the win in the Premier League clash. One of the biggest positives from the result was the late hat-trick scored by Nicolas Jackson. Mauricio Pochettino, who returned to former club Tottenham, was happy with the striker’s performance.

“I am happy for him because we know that when strikers don’t score, they suffer. So that is for people to think. He is really young, arrived to the club this summer, and it’s not easy to play for Chelsea. It’s the history, about winning, lifting trophies. That’s why as a coaching staff we need to provide the tools and be calm with the way we assess things. The confidence is there and I am so happy for him because he deserves the boost,” Pochettino, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

Mauricio Pochettino on 21 minutes of added time

A big talking point from the game was that a total of 21 minutes of added time was given in the match due to multiple VAR checks. Reacting to it, Pochettino said, “It’s really tough – 20 minutes more is crazy. We need to review a little bit but that is to have clear ideas in how we can be better. I think it’s now about being clever and putting everything into recovering the players. Sunday is another game against Man City and yes, now is not only about training, but also about recovering the players and deciding the expectation for that.”

Shifting the attention to the dramatic win, Pochettino felt that his side deserved the three points. “I think we deserved to win. We forced them to make too many mistakes. Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we bossed the game, our performance was good and forced them into making mistakes. If you look at everything you could see during the game, I think it was fair,” he explained.

The manager further added: “That’s why overall I think the performance was good, because we arrived in a different moment from Tottenham. They were top of the table and winning and playing very well, full of confidence. For us it was to come here to play the leader in the best situation we can. This performance showed that we were really good and I have nothing to say more than that.”

Pochettino hopes that this win can act as a stepping stone to help the team climb the table. “In the end we got what we wanted, we won 4-1. We can look and analyse and talk, but for us we are just happy with the three points. We have played really well from the start of the season, deserved more, but in the end it is about winning points. It was important to come here to Tottenham and win the game against a team playing really well. It could be an important three points for us, to help us now start to push up the table,” he elaborated.
