What did Sofyan Amrabat say about his new role?

Manchester United supporters were treated to the full debut of Sofyan Amrabat during their Carabao Cup triumph over Crystal Palace. The Morocco international made his debut at the weekend during the Premier League win over Burnley. However, it was in the domestic cup, he made his first start for his new team. Amrabat was impressive throughout the day, as he controlled the midfield and started plenty of attacks from the back.

However, to many people’s surprise, Sofyan Amrabat started in an unusual left-back position against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. Even though Amrabat was given the freedom to constantly move into midfield and dictate the play, not many would have anticipated to see him start at left-back. “I told the manager I will play where [he] needs me and where the team needs me, even if it is a goalkeeper! I play where I can help the team, today it was left-back. I had a bit of a free role, I think you saw I played a bit in midfield, so it was nice, it was good,” he told Sky Sports.

It was a perfect night: Sofyan Amrabat

Amrabat then dived into details of the experience of playing at Old Trafford and what he made about the victory. “I think it was a perfect night. We played very well and, most importantly, we won 3-0. I played one hour, so I think it was perfect. Since I was a child I worked for this [moment]. I worked very hard for my whole career and life [for this], so it was amazing to play here. Today is a Tuesday and the stadium was full, it is fantastic,” he added.

The midfielder, who is on loan from Fiorentina, is keen to produce more such nights to the supporters on the back of that comfortable win. “Against Burnley, we got a very important win and we showed big character. Today, we wanted to give the fans something to enjoy and I hope we can continue like this. It is clear that United is a huge club and we need to win. The pressure is high but we won this – and the manager says, every day, you need to win and that is what we want. We push very hard every day and hopefully we can win a lot and we can give the fans a lot more,” he elaborated.

However, Amrabat stated that he is not at his 100% yet and is keen to get there soon. “I am fit but not 100 per cent yet. But I think that is normal. I have not had a perfect pre-season, because of the transfer and everything, but I’m working very hard now to get there and I think the game today was a good game for me. A next step and I hope to continue like this and I will do everything to be, as soon as possible, 100 per cent,” he explained.
