What has Erik ten Hag made about the start to the season?

It has been difficult few months for Manchester United so far this season. The Red Devils have struggled to play at their previous best and have looked a shadow of their usual self. In addition, there have been some alarming results both home and away in various competitions, causing massive concerns among the supporters. Erik ten Hag’s side were unable to defend their Carabao Cup title after getting knocked out against Newcastle United recently.

Manchester United are also on the brink of elimination from the Champions League in the group stage itself. They would need to win their final two games to have a chance at progression to knockout stages. However, things are starting to look a bit brighter in the Premier League. Man United have won four of their last five games in the league, which would give optimism to their supporters about their chances of revival this campaign.

Erik ten Hag on start to the season

In a recent interview, manager Erik ten Hag has confessed that it has been a tough start, however, he feels they are heading in the right direction. “We are, say, one third [through the season]. It was a tough start, as we’ve seen, but I think we are catching up. And from the last five games we’ve won four. So we are in a good mood and I think we are [heading] in the right direction,” ten Hag told beIN SPORTS.

He added: “So, before we go into that intense programme in December, I think we’re building and we’re building confidence. We’re building strong belief, and we’re building also some routines. And now we hope we can more or less stay with the same line-up or with 12 to 14 players, while constructing the line-up, because I think so far that was our difficulty. Every time we had to change and we don’t develop routines. Every time we had to change.”

Ten Hag is happy with the progress the team is making but feels that there is more to come from them. He also believes Premier League is a difficult competition, hence every side will drop points at a certain point. Therefore, he wants his players to find some sort of consistency going forward and ignore the background noise.

“Well, I’m sure there’s more to come, but still it’s a good, good sign. It’s a good sign that we are progressing. But, also, you see that our competitors are also dropping points and there are no easy games in the Premier League and everyone will drop points at a certain point. So, make sure you get consistency in and don’t look too much at all the noise in the background, as they will also drop points,” he elaborated.
