Kristof Milak is a competitive swimmer from Hungary who currently is one of the most dominant swimmers in the sport. In long course races, he is unmatched in the 200-meter butterfly with a world record. In addition, he has set a European benchmark for the 100-meter butterfly. He has also etched his name in Hungarian record books in the 50-meter backstroke in short courses.
The 2020 Summer Olympics, his Olympic debut, witnessed him grabbing a gold in the 200-meter butterfly and a silver in its 100-meter counterpart. On the global stage, he clinched three golds and a silver at the World Aquatics Championships, and he has captured three golds at the European events. At the 2018 Youth Olympics, he won golds in the 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, and 200-meter butterfly.
The championship in Budapest in 2017 saw him setting a world junior and Hungarian record in the 100-meter butterfly semifinals. That same year, at the junior championships in Indianapolis, he played a key role in attaining a world junior and championship record in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. In Buenos Aires, during the 2018 Youth Olympics, he went home with four medals – three of which were gold medals and a silver medal.
In Gwangju 2019, Kristof Milak surpassed Michael Phelps‘ long-standing record in the 200-meter butterfly by a significant 0.78 seconds and attained a new benchmark. In doing so, he became the only swimmer other than Phelps to hold this record in 18 years. In fact, he is the first swimmer in nearly ten years, besides Phelps, to set a long course butterfly record in either the 100 or 200-meter events. The last was Serbia’s Milorad Čavić in 2009.
Joining Team Iron, Kristof Milak participated in the 2019 International Swimming League. At the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021, he clinched gold and set an Olympic record in the 200-meter butterfly. He also reset the Olympic benchmark in the 100-meter butterfly semifinals. In 2022, at the Hungarian National Championships, he showcased personal bests, especially in the 200-meter and 100-meter butterfly.
