Which injured player could return for United at Anfield?

The game of this Premier League weekend will be at Anfield, as Liverpool entertain Manchester United for an important contest. This is a match that has always been one of the fixtures of the season, with fans witnessing some mind-blowing clashes over the years. Lately though Liverpool have held the edge in these contests and United have struggled to get the better of them, particularly on this ground.

Keeping in mind Liverpool’s good form and Manchester United’s struggles, it will not be a surprise if the same trend continues on Sunday. There will be some noticeable absentees for the visitors, with Bruno Fernandes missing the contest through suspension. Besides, United will also miss some others through injuries. Manager Erik ten Hag provided an update on Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw after both were withdrawn against Bayern Munich in the mid-week Champions League contest.

Which injured player could return for Manchester United?

“Harry [Maguire], he will not be available for the coming games. But we don’t think it is for the long term. Luke Shaw, he trained this morning. So we think he is available for Sunday,” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, informed during the pre-match press conference. He also provided an update on two of his front players’ availability for this fixture. “Marcus Rashford. He will [be back, but] Martial not,” the manager explained.

Manchester United were humiliated by Liverpool 7-0 last season at Anfield in the Premier League, a result that shocked many people. Ten Hag wants his side to learn from it, as he prepares for the tough clash. “I think everyone knows we have to be highly motivated when you go to Anfield. It is a great place to go and you know it is going to be tough. I think that is something which every top footballer wants, to have that challenge. You have to look forward and of course, last year, we have it in our memory, but you have to take the benefit from it. Learn from it. On Sunday, we can prove that,” he explained.

The United manager then came to the defence of summer signing Rasmus Hojlund. Despite his brilliant form in the Champions League, Hojlund has not been able to transform it into the league. “As you said, he has scored at the highest level. Champions League, five goals, is massive for the performance of a young player. I don’t think there are so many young players who can do that, he has the potential. We recognise that and we are sure he will get there. He will go and score in the Premier League, I see how he is working in training. We have to work on our attacking game and he has had his opportunities. The team have brought him to the right place, but it can always be better. As you say, he has not scored so far in the Premier League. So we have to work on that,” he explained.
