Wild moment driver plunges 20m down an inner city ‘cliff’ after crashing through a street barrier

A driver in his 70s has survived a horrific crash after driving his car off a 20m high cliff onto the road below.

Emergency services were called just after 10am on Monday after the white Hyundai i30 hatchback went over the cliff in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Glebe.

NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue arrived to find the destroyed car next to a pile of glass, debris and broken branches on Railway Street.

Miraculously, the occupant was still alive after their car fell metres from the above Darghan Street.

Railway worker Craig Klineberg was sitting in his car close by when he heard a noise ‘like a train crash’, then seconds later another sound ‘like thunder’.

‘The driver was laying in the passenger seat and not moving. His face was tucked up against the side of the car,’ he said.

Mr Klineberg rushed to the crashed car while others called for help, and found the man mumbling.

‘I was happy I got a murmur out of him, I just did that every 30 seconds and then the police showed up,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The man, who lives in the area, was visiting his friend Sylvia Sagi and she was due to accompany him to a doctor’s appointment.

Instead, he was taken to the nearby Royal Prince Alfred Hospital by ambulance. The extent of his injuries are not yet known.

‘He fell over yesterday, hit his head, and he should have gone to the hospital then but he refused, and I think something has happened as a result of that injury,’ Ms Sagi said.

‘He’ll be okay according to the paramedics. It’s an absolute miracle he’s alive – I can’t believe it.’

She said she was in ‘shock’ when she realised how far the car had fallen.

‘He was in and out of consciousness,’ Ms Sagi told the Daily Telegraph.

NSW Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
