Woolworths shoppers shocked over expensive mistake on roast chicken

Woolworths shoppers were left stunned after spotting a normally affordable fan favourite being sold for hundreds of dollars.

The supermarket giant priced a country-style whole roast chicken at an eye-watering $240, then put it out for sale on the hot counter at its Hilton Plaza store in Adelaide.

A photo of the overcooked price was shared to Instagram with the caption: ‘Inflation has hit the Bachelor’s Handbag at Hilton Woolies.’

A roast chicken usually costs $12, meaning the chook in question was displaying a 1,900 per cent increase.

One woman who shops at the same store guessed it was an innocent mistake by trainees.

‘They got newbie staff in training in deli I believe,’ she said.

Australians love slang but those out-of-the-loop on the latest buzzwords can now catch up via a batch of new Gen-Z favourites added to the dictionary.

The recently released ninth edition of the Macquarie Dictionary includes words like situationship, cozzie, menty-b, bachelor’s handbag, goblin mode, Barbiecore, spicy cough and the ick.

‘Yesterday I asked for 250g of ham and got 560g. Ham for all! We love ham!’

One person saw the pricey poultry as a grim predictor of things to come.

‘Wouldn’t surprise me the rate of inflation these days – soon we will become a banana republic,’ she said.

But most Australians saw the funny side of the crazy price.

One woman was completely okay with the price, given how highly she rates roast chickens.

‘Worth it. Best BBQ chicken around.’

Some thought the chicken must have been a talented bird.

‘Maybe it got first prize at the Royal Show?’ a woman wondered.

Several men reckoned it was a designer label meal.

‘That’s a Dolce & Gabbana chicken,’ one said.

Another thought it looked more like a Louis Vuitton bird.

‘Is it too late to claim it lays golden eggs?’ one asked.

The $240 price tag for the roast chook was not even the most expensive mistake seen this year in Aussie supermarkets.

A Perth woman paid a whopping $336.66 for the roast chicken at a Woolworths store in Innaloo after a stuff-up at the checkout.

In a video posted on TikTok, the woman known as Karen was left gobsmacked by the hefty bill as she revealed the price of the product printed on her receipt.

‘Woolworths charged me $336.66 for a roast chicken,’ she said.

‘$336 for a roast chicken!’

The camera then zoomed in on the amount Karen paid for the food.

She then pointed to the roast chicken in a bag that she bought from the store, which was placed on top of the kitchen counter at her home.

‘This chicken! I know it’s RSPCA,’ she said. ‘Did they put it up at the f***ing Crown Towers before they killed the bird?’
