Natalie Cassidy has opened up about the future of Sonia Fowler on EastEnders and dropped a hint that her character “could be there for a long time.” The 40-year-old first joined the BBC soap in 1993.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Natalie shared what the future holds for Sonia Fowler as well as talking about her exciting new job that she’ll be doing alongside her acting career.

Natalie has recently teamed up with Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page to launch a brand new podcast, Off The Telly. The podcast will look at the week’s telly offerings – from the best-avoided shows to the upcoming programmes that have everyone talking.

When asked if we will see another 30 years of Sonia, Natalie said: “I think she’s a character who could be there for a long time. I think she’s the fabric of the show.

“I always say that you’ve got your kind of massive A characters and people that are murdering people or, you know, the danger or the gangsters. But she’s kind of a constant normal.

“So I think she could be there. But at the same time, for me creatively, it’s lovely to be doing this pod. I’m doing another pod soon – my own pod.

“So this year is about kind of branching out and doing some other stuff creatively as well. But, if I can run Sonia alongside that, I love playing her, so I’d be very happy to make it all work at the same time.”

Natalie got her big television break when she was just 10-years-old in 1993 and has played Sonia Fowler for 30 years. Some of her biggest storylines have included teenage pregnancy, love affairs and a cancer scare.

However, she took a break in 2007 and made a few repeated cameo appearances on the soap. In 2014, Natalie decided to make the permanent decision to return to the show.

Away from EastEnders, Natalie leads a quiet life with her fiancé Marc Humphreys and their two children, Eliza and Joanie. The couple have been together since 2014 after meeting on the set of EastEnders.

Off The Telly launches on 28th February on BBC Sounds.
