BBC Strictly bosses slammed by pro as ‘Nigel Harman’s time ended by production silliness’

Vincent Simone has criticised Strictly Come Dancing bosses for staging “increasingly elaborate” routines, as he suggested Nigel Harman might have been forced to leave the competition early due to “production silliness”. The former Strictly professional spoke to ICE36 about Nigel’s “heartbreaking” injury and how he was “a good candidate to potentially win the show”.

Nigel and his professional partner Katya Jones announced they were pulling out of last week’s live quarter-final just hours before the programme aired. On Saturday, a spokesperson for the BBC told Express.co.uk: “Unfortunately Nigel has sustained an injury which means he is unable to perform in tonight’s show and has had to withdraw from Strictly.”

Taking aim at Strictly’s choreography, Vincent said: “I’m not really sure what happened but it sounded like he got injured practicing for his routine with some of the backing dancers. Was he supposed to fly? Did he get thrown?

“The routines are getting more elaborate as the show moves towards the final but I’m a bit old-fashioned, I like things as traditional as possible. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing two people perform a magical routine that tells a story.

“I’d much rather watch that than having all of the special effects and people flying all over the place. I know that the show is entertainment, but when it comes to dancing, I’m a traditionalist.

“I think it’s a shame (that Nigel got injured),” he continued. “If he got injured during training with Katya, then you can understand that because it can happen.

“It would have been sad, of course, but I feel like Nigel’s competition is over because of the silliness of the production.”

Vincent went on to express how sad he was for Strictly fans following Nigel’s shock exit.

He said: “I am going to miss him performing because I thought that he was a good candidate to potentially win the show – I’m pretty sure he would have got to the semi-final at least.

“I was really looking forward to seeing his new performance on Saturday night.

“For the viewers, it’s devastating because he was such a popular celebrity and he had a lot of people voting for him every week, so when something like this happens it’s sad for everyone.”

With Nigel and Katya gone from the competition, the following couples will compete in this weekend’s semi-final: Annabel Croft and Johannes Radebe, Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola, Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin, and Bobby Brazier and Dianne Buswell.

Strictly Come Dancing returns this Satuday at 7.35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
