He has regularly served as a correspondent for GQ magazine. Magary interviewed Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson for the magazine in 2013, and the interview was extensively covered due to Robertson’s statements, notably those on homosexuality.  He’s also written articles for NBC, Maxim, Rolling Stone, Comedy Central, New York, ESPN, Yahoo!, Playboy, The Atlantic, and Penthouse.

Chopped and Departure from Deadspin

Magary applied in 2012 to be on an amateur version of the food competition show Chopped. He answered the application’s questions in an episode of his Deadspin comedy column. Moreover, he won $10,000 on the ninth episode of Chopped’s 22nd season in April 2015, competing against other amateur home cooks.

He announced his resignation from Deadspin on the October 31, 2019. From August 2019 until September 2020, he writes on politics and culture for Gen, a Medium publication. Similarly, he has been writing columns for SF Gate, the San Francisco Chronicle’s digital sister site, since April 2020. Magary and several former Deadspin writers founded Defector Media in 2020.
