Gypsy Rose Blanchard is free from prison and telling her story, more than 8 years after making the fatal decision to end her mother’s control over her life. She’s released a new book, and she’s announced a new docuseries, filmed before her release last month. The combined stories are Blanchard’s own side of her life story — after she says she’s spent her whole life watching others tell their version of it.

At the same time, more information about Blanchard’s parole and her ongoing restrictions are being made public. Many who have followed her story and worried about the long-term effects of what she suffered as a child, and in prison, will be pleased to know that the conditions of her release include a mental health program, something many adults who were thrust into the spotlight amid abuse as children have since sought.

Gypsy Had A Very Unusual Childhood

Blanchard grew up in the spotlight, as a child with severe debilitating medical conditions that brought her family to the attention of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and celebrities, all of whom wanted to help. The problem, though, was that those conditions were fake, forced on Blanchard by her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

At age 23, desperate to escape her mother’s control and abuse, Blanchard supplied her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, with a knife, and at her behest, he killed Dee Dee.

The two were both arrested and convicted, but while Gypsy has regained her freedom, Godejohn is serving a life sentence. Blanchard was released on parole on December 28th, and is now living with her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson, a special education teacher who she met, became engaged to, and married while she was in prison.

She’s made new social media accounts, and she’s taking control of her own life — but there are still some things outside her control.

Because she’s on parole, there are still limits on her freedom. According to TMZ, she’s not allowed to contact her ex-boyfriend, who is still in prison for the murder of her mother.

She’s also required to complete a mental health program.

On her new Facebook account, Blanchard has been sharing information about her new book, titled Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom. According to the publisher, Penguin Random House, it includes interview transcripts, journal entries, and Gypsy’s own illustrations, and will be available January 9th.

She’s also announced a new docuseries, a 6-hour special being released on Lifetime over three days, January 5th, 6th, and 7th. It’s titled The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and, as the title suggests, was filmed before her release.

The series is slated to open with Blanchard’s story of physical abuse and allegations of sexual abuse, follow her through the family’s move to a Habitat for Humanity house after Hurricane Katrina, her first experience running away (Blanchard says her mother lured her home and used voodoo to keep her there), all the way to her secret engagement while in prison, and her marriage behind bars.
