Speaking to PEOPLE, Garner says she has to be conscious about the way she perceives her children so she doesn’t make assumptions or have unrealistic expectations of them.
Garner Admits What’s Challenging About Raising Teens
“I have a really hard time not saying, ‘This is what I see you as,’ and, ‘I think you should,’” she explained. “I really have to sit on my hands,” she continued, explaining she struggles to let her kids make their own decisions, even if it conflicts with what she’d choose for them.
Garner shares Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and son Samuel, 12, with Affleck. Though she’s often notoriously private about her personal life, Jen offered an update about how their kids are doing.
“They’re really solid right now,” the actress remarked. “I’m just watching them in this new phase of life where they’re figuring out who they’re going to be and what they’re going to study. And I’m so interested in them. All the time, I’m interested in everything about them.”
Garner also spoke specifically about her eldest daughter, who’s set to graduate high school and start college later this year. The 13 Going on 30 alum previously shared last fall that Violet was touring universities.
“It is exciting,” Jen revealed. “I can see the stress — even though the excitement and stress go hand in hand. But she’s handling it like a champ and she’s totally in charge. I’m not having to say, ‘Are you doing this, are you doing this?’ She’s a self-starter. And I’m just proud of her no matter what.”
Garner Stayed Silent On The Rumors About Affleck’s Marriage
One topic Garner refused to divulge was the rumors surrounding Affleck and his current marriage to Jennifer Lopez. The paired tied the knot in 2022 nearly two decades after calling off their original engagement. Despite being newlyweds, the pair have been inundated with rumors of relationship problems for months.
Some reports claim Affleck close relationship to Garner despite their divorce is a source of tension for J.Lo. The pop star was allegedly angered after photos of Affleck and Garner embracing were published, leading her to supposedly suggest couple’s therapy to save their marriage.
This year, Lopez seemed to try to take the public narrative surrounding her marriage in her own hands. Not only do she and Affleck discuss their relationship in her new documentaries, fans are also convinced she made a subtle reference to their relationship fuss in her music.
While there seems to be a lot of interest in what’s going on between the couple behind-the-scenes, the drama wasn’t enough to push Lopez’s music and movies to the top, with recent reports calling her recent career moves a “flop.”
“Jennifer’s always been a marketing and PR genius but her biggest miscalculation here is that she thinks the world is still interested in Ben and Jennifer’s love story,” her former publicist, Rob Shuter, told The Post. “But no one cares about Bennifer anymore. The world has moved on.”
And, given Jennifer Garner’s new interview, she’s clearly moved on from her ex and is focusing on their kids as well as her future.
