Unfortunately, Kate Winslet is one of many celebrities who has been critiques for their weight throughout their careers. When Kate broke onto the scene in the early ‘90s, she was considered curvier than many of her female counterparts, leading to tabloid speculation and criticism.

Recently, the Titanic actress reflected on what it was like to be body shamed so early on in her career, and she has a message for anyone who criticized her weight.

In her October Vogue cover story published on Monday, September 11, Winslet, aged 47, revealed, “I was consistently told I was the wrong shape. was consistently told I would have to settle for less.”

However, the mother-of-three says there’s a silver lining to the bullying she’s endured, as it’s made her stronger and not willing to “take that s—t from anyone” from anyone. “I think it probably stems from having been subjected to the most awful scrutiny and judgment, and, actually, I would go so far as to say bullying, from mainstream media when I was in my 20s,” Kate continued.

She also referenced the #MeToo movement, saying it’s made the next generations of actresses less fearful about speaking out and pushing back against negative norms and practices in the entertainment industry.

“Young actresses now — f—k me — they are unafraid. It makes me so proud,” Kate went on. “And I think, Yes, all the s—t flinging, all the struggle, all the using my voice for years, often being finger-pointed at and laughed at — I don’t give a s—t!”

“It was all bloody worth it,” the Oscar winner concluded. “Because the culture is changing in the way that I couldn’t in my wildest dreams have imagined in my 20s.”

Kate’s new Vogue interview is hardly the first time she’s opened up about how difficult it was dealing with criticism over her body as young actress. Just last year, she discussed the backlash she received following Titanic, though it remains one of the most successful roles of her career to date.

Kate admitted the body shaming became so horrible, that it was tantamount to abuse and greatly affected her mental health.

“Apparently I was too fat,” she said while appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “Why were they so mean to me? They were so mean. I wasn’t even f**king fat.”

As for what Kate wishes she said at the time, the actress elaborated, “I would have said to journalists, I would have responded, I would have said, ‘Don’t you dare treat me like this. I’m a young woman, my body is changing, I’m figuring it out, I’m deeply insecure, I’m terrified, don’t make this any harder than it already is.’”

Kate concluded, “That’s bullying, you know, and actually borderline abusive, I would say.”

Months prior to the podcast interview, Kate echoed a similar sentiment to The Sunday Times, revealing she was told to settle for “fat girl parts” early in her career, a statement that has always stayed with her.
