He was a member of Harry Redknapp’s Third Division team that defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the 1983-84 FA Cup. Savage briefly played for Bradford City before joining Bolton Wanderers for a price of £30,000 in September 1987.
Furthermore, he made his Bolton debut against Halifax Town on September 12 and scored his first goal for the club a week later against Torquay.
On May 7, 1988, he scored the game-winning goal against his former club Wrexham to secure Bolton’s promotion from the Fourth Division. He played in the 1989 Football League Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.
On April 7, 1990, Savage played his final professional match against Preston North End. He shattered his leg during the game and had to retire as a result of the accident.
He was also appointed to be the player-manager for Knowsley United. Savage took part in Tranmere Rovers’ Football in the Community program in 2006.
