The SNL Skit That Caused Lindsay Lohan To Walk Off The Set

Highlights

  • Lindsay Lohan broke character during a popular SNL skit and walked off the set.
  • Breaking character during skits is actually enjoyed by the audience and makes the skit funnier.
  • Lohan’s role in Mean Girls led to her first hosting gig on SNL, which was a nerve-wracking experience for her.

Lindsay Lohan is widely known for her roles in films like The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls. Her film roles spoke to a generation of young people who grew up with the young star. Lohan’s role in Mean Girls would provide her with the necessary connections that led to her first hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.

While the SNL cast is encouraged not to break character during the skits, it can be difficult to maintain one’s composure during a live show.

This proved to be a challenge for Lohan, who broke character during one particular sketch. The sketch has remained popular to this day and Lohan recently revealed a behind-the-scenes secret about it.

Lindsay Walked Off The Set Of ‘SNL’ After Breaking Character During This Classic ‘Debbie Downer’ Skit

Lohan was interviewed by Vogue in 2022 and looked back on various moments throughout her career. One of those moments was her very first time hosting Saturday Night Live in 2004. Lohan was promoting her starring role in the film Mean Girls at the time.

While Lohan was honored to host the show, she did admit to having some nerves before hitting the stage.

“It’s always so nerve-wracking before you go to do SNL,” she said. “I was really nervous.”

A lot of people remember Lohan’s appearance for one skit in particular. Debbie Downer was a recurring character portrayed by Rachel Dratch. Debbie would always bring up the most negative things, no matter how much fun her friends were trying to have.

This particular Debbie Downer skit took place on a trip to Disneyland. Lohan later recalled that she had an idea in mind about how to avoid breaking character during the skit.

“I just remember thinking, ‘If I just don’t look at Jimmy Fallon, then I’ll be fine,’” she said. “And all I kept doing, in the live, was looking at him. I actually got so nervous at the end, and I couldn’t stop laughing that I just burst, and I walked off, because I didn’t want to get in trouble. But then everyone started laughing.”

Charlie Sheen ended up meeting Lindsay Lohan just minutes before their Scary Movie 5 scene in the makeup room.

While the actors themselves are encouraged not to break character during the skits, it’s actually something that makes the audience enjoy the skit even more. That is exactly why this Debbie Downer skit is one of the most praised and popular SNL skits in recent memory.

“I feel like that was one of the best experiences, just altogether in everything I’ve ever done, because I’ve never had so much fun just doing something,” Lohan said. “And just when everyone becomes, like, it becomes just contagious laughter. It’s just the best. And then the audience can’t help but laugh. I think that’s the funniest on SNL, when people just break and lose it, because it’s so real.”

“When you’re on SNL you’re like, okay, I’m doing something right.”

Lindsay’s Starring Role In ‘Mean Girls’ Led To Her Hosting Debut On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Lohan was raised on Long Island, NY and started her career as a child. She signed with Ford Models at the age of three, modeling for Calvin Klein Kids and Abercrombie. She also appeared in several television commercials, from Wendy’s to Pizza Hut. At the age of 10, she acted in the soap opera Another World.

Her acting talent was already being noticed and she soon landed her big break in The Parent Trap. The Disney remake features Lohan starring as a pair of twins trying to get their divorced parents back together. The film was a huge success and Lohan became a celebrity overnight. She later played Bette Midler’s daughter in the sitcom Bette, but left the show when the production moved from New York to Los Angeles.

After two made-for-TV movies, Life Size and Get a Clue, Lohan found success with another Disney remake. In 2003, Lohan starred opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday. The film was another hit for Lohan and she was now seen as someone with the potential for a long career. After Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Lohan starred in perhaps her most famous movie, Mean Girls, in 2004.

SNL veteran Tina Fey wrote the film and the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, served as producer. That film would lead to Lohan’s first hosting gig on SNL that same year.

As 2005 dawned, Lohan became the subject of serious rumors regarding her weight. Paparazzi snapped several pictures of Lohan that summer looking much thinner than before. A lot of people were concerned for the young star, believing it could be the result of drug use or an eating disorder.

Lohan graced the cover of Vanity Fair that fall and spoke candidly about the previous year. She said that Fey and SNL creator Lorne Michaels were responsible for an intervention of sorts, having a heart-to-heart with Lohan backstage on Saturday Night Live.

“They sat me down,” Lohan began, “literally before I was going to do the show, and they said, ‘You need to take care of yourself. We care about you too much, and we’ve seen too many people do this,’ and I just started bawling. I knew I had a problem and I couldn’t admit it.”
