This Minor Actor Appeared In More Seinfeld Episodes Than Any Other Non-Core Cast Member

Highlights

  • Seinfeld revolved around Jerry Seinfeld’s real-life experiences, which made the show about him and his group of friends.
  • The core cast members, including Michael Richards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jason Alexander, appeared in over 170 episodes, driving the plotlines.
  • Ruth Cohen, who played the cashier in Monk’s Café, appeared in 101 episodes but was only credited for two, leaving her bond with the main cast unknown.

Seinfeld had a great run in the 1990s and has become one of the most iconic sitcoms in television history. However, it’s hard to classify what it was really about. This was because, for the most part, Jerry Seinfeld wrote his part using his real-life experiences rather than trying to get inspiration from someone else.

This means that the show revolved around him and his small group of friends who became the core cast members. They made appearances in most episodes throughout the show’s run. However, there was one cast member who also appeared in most of the episodes of the show, despite not being part of the core cast.

The Main Seinfeld Cast Members Appeared In Over 170 Episodes

The Things

The Seinfeld core cast members, including Michael Richards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jason Alexander, were an integral part of the show and drove the plotlines in every episode despite the fact that the show was really about “nothing.”

This means that they appeared in nearly every single episode. This was true about Jerry Seinfeld, Michael Richards, and Jason Alexander. However, Julia Louis-Dreyfus did miss two episodes, only appearing in 170 of them.

Working together on so many episodes allowed the main stars of the show to forge strong relationships with each other and become real-life friends. By the time the finale came around, they found it hard to say goodbye to the show that they had made so many memories from and to each other.

Jason Alexander described how hard it was for the core members to conclude their time together:

“Julia, Michael, Jerry, and myself — and we would do this ridiculous thing called ‘the circle of power,’ which was nothing more than the four of us kind of huddling up and going, ‘Have a good show.’ It really was nothing else, it was just silliness. But on our final introduction to the audience on tape night we got into the circle of power and Jerry said, ‘I just want to say something to you guys…’ Already this has a serious tone, which is unexpected. And he said this really beautiful thing. He said, ‘For the rest of our lives when anybody thinks of one of us, they will think of the four of us, and I can’t think of any people that I would rather have that be true of.”

Moreover, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, the men who co-created the show, are still friends to this day and still support each other’s projects.

Only One Other Cast Member Had As Many Seinfeld Appearances

But what about the guest stars? Have they been able to appear in enough episodes to create any meaningful connections with other actors?

One cast member did. Ruth Cohen, who played Ruthie Cohen, the cashier in Monk’s Café, the diner where the main cast spent a lot of time in nearly every episode, appeared in 101 episodes of Seinfeld. However, she was only credited for two.

Her lack of credits on the 99 reminding episodes where she was visible on camera was because she did not have any lines of dialogue. However, this was still an incredible feat for someone who probably didn’t expect much exposure when auditioning for the small part.

Nevertheless, fans will never know how close of a bond she forged with the main cast. Ruth Cohen passed away in 2008 and there are no records of her discussing her role on Seinfeld or her relationship with any fellow actors on the show.

Seinfeld Had A Near-Endless List Of Guest Stars

While Ruth Cohen broke the record for how many episodes of the show she appeared in, she was a rarity on Seinfeld. The sitcom attracted many guest stars but most of them appeared for one episode or two at most.

Many of these guest stars played Jerry’s girlfriends, with at least 73 of them falling in this category. Unlike in real life, Jerry had tons of love interests in the show, although his relationships never seemed to end very well.

He broke up with Marcia Brady, the perfect girlfriend, ruined his relationship with Teri Hatcher by offending her when he spent all his time trying to figure out whether she had cosmetic surgery done to her chest, and wasn’t able to kindle his relationship with Marlee Matlin.

Jerry’s girlfriends weren’t the only guest stars on the show, however. The other cast members also had romantic entanglements (which also ended spectacularly badly). For example, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character, Elaine, was often swept off her feet by various love interests, including the “Dentist to the Stars,” Tim Whatley.

Tim was played by the one co-star Julia didn’t mind kissing on set, Brian Cranston, who was going to find great fame himself with Breaking Bad decades after playing Elaine’s one-time flame.
