“Only Murders In The Building” star Amy Ryan will replace Tyne Daly in the new Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley’s Tony-winning drama “Doubt: A Parable.”
The Roundabout Theatre Company announced on Tuesday that Ryan will replace Daly in the role after the “Cagney & Lacey” star was “unexpectedly hospitalized on Friday and unfortunately needs to withdraw from the production while she receives medical care.”
The production added that Daly is “thankfully expected to make a full recovery.”
Sources previously told Page Six that Daly was taken to the hospital from a recent rehearsal.
The production was meant to start previews on Feb 2, and the first one was canceled as a result.
A theater source told us that Daly “has been in the hospital since that time and her understudy Isabel Keating went on Saturday night with one rehearsal.”
Ryan’s first performance in “Doubt” will be Feb. 13. Keating will play the role until then.
The show also stars Liev Schreiber.
Director Scott Ellis commented in a statement: “With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery. We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in a quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of ‘Sister Aloysius.’ We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production up on its feet during this first week of performances.”
The show will now officially open Mar. 7 and run through April 14 at the Todd Haimes Theatre in NYC.
The play follows an exacting principal of a Catholic school in a working-class part of the Bronx who suspects nefarious relations between a charismatic priest, Father Flynn, and a student.
A movie version starred Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the main roles.
