Sheffield city centre was host to an unusual sight this afternoon as water cascaded from a burst water main at the end of Fargate turning High Street into a new river.
The spectacular torrent of water burst from the pavement where works are taking place outside Boots and Café Nero near the Cathedral tram stop. Two jets of water were seen arcing high into the air from what Yorkshire Water said was a burst pipe.
The water forced the closure of several local business including those directly affected by the water flow and others which lost water supply while repairs were underway. Footage from Sheffield Online showed the water spraying over the area near Boots and flowing down the road.

In a statement on social media about the incident, Yorkshire Water said: “We’re sorry customers in S1 may have low pressure or no water due to a burst pipe. We’re doing everything we can to get this fixed as soon as possible.
“We appreciate your patience & we’ll keep you updated on our progress.” Yorkshire Water reported that water had been restored to all locally by 6pm.
Residents didn’t appear to worried about water with crowds gathering to see the jets of water. One person wrote on social media: “How wonderful it is to see Sheffield City Council have reinstated the Goodwin Fountain.”
Another quipped: “Could say it’s an improvement and has drawn the biggest attraction in the city centre for years.”
