2024 January transfer window: When does it open and close?

Clubs around the world will be on red alert for a bargain here or a mega-money deal there as they conduct business during the 2024 January transfer window.

Much harder to anticipate than the summer window, January can be a truly chaotic time as teams desperately try to plug holes in their squad or make the finishing touches before pushing on in the new year.

Clubs are often hamstrung in the winter by inflated fees and the lack of readily available options, and any deals that are made often carry with them a huge amount of pressure for the player making the switch.

Here’s when the 2024 January transfer window opens and closes in the 2023/24 season.

The 2024 January transfer window opens on Monday 1 January for Premier League, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga clubs. Serie A and La Liga join the party on Tuesday 2 January.

The window’s opening will see any deals that have already been agreed in principle go through and official registrations can take place. It’s also when other clubs start sending their bids to sides for players they’d like to poach.

After a month of chaos in which Premier League clubs will play plenty of games across multiple competitions, the window will slam shut (yes, it does slam) on 1 February at 23:00 GMT.

La Liga’s window also closes at 23:00 GMT, Serie A shuts at 19:00, Bundesliga at 17:00, and Ligue 1 at 22:00.

It was a theme of the summer transfer window in 2023 that Saudi Pro League clubs could still sign players well after European clubs, but that won’t be the case this time. Their window shuts on 30 January.

While the biggest moves often happen in the summer, January has seen some sizeable transfers take place over the years and there are plenty of players in Europe who would benefit from a switch in the winter window.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Jadon Sancho leave Manchester United on loan given he has been frozen out by Erik ten Hag and no resolution seems imminent. Kalvin Phillips may leave Manchester City as he simply isn’t getting the minutes he needs.

Barcelona are expected to welcome 18-year-old Brazilian Vitor Roque to the side, while there is a chance Ivan Toney’s return from suspension will be followed by an immediate departure, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all linked.

Arsenal, Fulham and Liverpool are all fighting to sign Brazilian midfielder Andre from Fluminense, while Aaron Ramsdale could depart Arsenal after being usurped by David Raya in goal.
