Alisson Becker has won the first Castrol Save of the Month award of the 2023/24 season thanks to his stunning stop in Liverpool’s dramatic win over Newcastle United.
The Liverpool number one had to be at his brilliant best to deny Miguel Almiron’s stunning volleyed effort, with his save helping to earn the Reds a thrilling 2-1 win at St James’ Park.
With his side a goal and a man down – following Anthony Gordon’s opener and Virgil van Dijk’s subsequent red card – Alisson kept his team in the game against Newcastle when he got two hands on a thunderous Almiron volley from just inside the box, punching the ball off the crossbar.
On top of saving the first effort, Alisson also had the wherewithal to get up and push the ball out for a corner kick before the onrushing Alexander Isak could pounce on the loose ball inside the penalty box.
Following that save, Liverpool would mount a dramatic second half comeback thanks to substitute Darwin Nunez. The substitute bagged a stunning brace to earn a come-from-behind win for the Reds, first scoring in the 81st minute before sealing the match winner three minutes into stoppage time.
This is the first time that Alisson has won the Castrol Save of the Month award, with the award being awarded to David de Gea, Gavin Bazunu, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale (2x) and Nick Pope (2x) during its inaugural season.
Other nominees for the August 2023 award included Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario, Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Wolves’ Jose Sa, Brentford’s Mark Flekken, and West Ham’s Alphonso Areola.
