How Robert Sanchez reacted to error after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was “disappointed and upset” after his mistake in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

The summer signing has arguably been Chelsea’s player of the season thus far, having been one of the few bright spots in what’s been a rather miserable 2023/24 campaign for the Blues.

Things started to finally look a bit less gloomy at Stamford Bridge on Saturday when goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk gave Chelsea a shock 2-0 lead over London rivals Arsenal on Saturday evening. An uncharacteristic error from Sanchez, however, would give the Gunners a route back into the game, with a poor clearance from inside the box leading to Declan Rice making it 2-1.

Buoyed by Rice’s goal, Arsenal would then score another through Leandro Trossard to salvage a draw at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking about his goalkeeper’s mistake to the press after the game, manager Pochettino revealed Sanchez was “upset” with the error.

He said: “We are so happy with him [Sanchez]. Of course he is disappointed and upset with his decision but mistakes happen in football.

“This goal gave the belief to Arsenal. We can maybe read better the situation, the tempo, the timing. We can take risks on 77 minutes because it’s our philosophy, but maybe there is another decision you can take.

“It’s not to blame someone. It can happen. It will arrive with time, when to be calm and when to take risks, and we are still a really young team getting to know each other.”

Sanchez will be hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointment next week when Chelsea welcome another London rival – Brentford – to Stamford Bridge for the Premier League’s lunchtime kick-off.
