Chelsea’s owners remain firmly behind manager Mauricio Pochettino despite the Blues’ ongoing struggles on the pitch, 90min understands.
Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Everton saw Chelsea drop to 12th in the Premier League, the same position the team finished under the guidance of interim boss Frank Lampard last year.
The arrival of Pochettino, coupled with further spending on the likes of Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer, was supposed to see Chelsea soar towards the top of the table this season but a run of just two wins from eight Premier League games has added to the immense pressure on Pochettino’s shoulders.
While some fans have called for Pochettino to depart, 90min understands those responsible for making such a decision remain firmly behind the Argentine.
Chelsea’s owners are sympathetic to the current situation at Stamford Bridge and understand that Pochettino needs time to make an impact on a squad which has been ravaged by both injuries and immense transfer dealings.
Behind the scenes, it is understood that Pochettino was not happy with the make-up of Chelsea’s squad when the summer transfer window closed. As 90min has previously reported, a new goalkeeper is on Pochettino’s wish list, as is a move for a pure striker – a demand which the Chelsea boss made public after Sunday’s defeat.
“If we are not able to score today with all the chances we had… we have to score if we want to win the game,” he said.
“After the first half of the season, we need to check. That is the reality. If we are not receiving enough, maybe we need to do some movement. That is the thing to analyse with the sporting directors, to see if we can change this dynamic and improve in the second half of the season.
“We need to be more aggressive. Then it’s a massive assessment and when the transfer window opens, we will see what we can do.”
Chelsea are prepared to resolve both issues in the summer transfer window but would act in January if the right deal arises. Officials are ready to try and convince Napoli to part ways with Victor Osimhen this winter but appreciate a deal is far more likely at the end of the season.
