When do Inter and AC Milan play each other in 2023/24?

The Serie A season will kick off in August and both Inter and AC Milan will be hoping to steal the Scudetto from Napoli. The fixtures for both clubs have now been announced and they will each have an eye on the dates for the Derby della Madonnina.

San Siro will brace itself for another season of bitter rivalry in Milan, with the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri enjoying two very different campaigns last year.

For Inter, it was a year of celebration that ultimately ended in disappointment. While their league form was far from perfect, finishing third and 18 points off Napoli at the summit, they embraced the cup competitions. Their first trophy lift came after a 3-0 victory over Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana in January, which was followed with a Coppa Italia triumph at the end of the season. Inter also reached the Champions League final but suffered a heartbreakingly narrow loss to Manchester City.

Meanwhile, despite heading into the 2022/23 season as defending champions, Milan struggled to make an impact. Finishing fourth ended up feeling like an achievement, as reaching the Champions League semi-finals should have done had they not been so easily brushed aside by Inter.

However, a new season brings new hope and stirs up old rivalries once again. So let’s see when the two Italian giants face off next year.

The clubs don’t have to wait too long before renewing their rivalry, with the opening Derby della Madonnina coming only four weeks into the new Serie A season. It will take place on the weekend of 16 September, one matchday earlier than the first meeting between the pair last season.

Inter will act as the hosts for the opener, but both will get a small break in between the match and their previous fixture due to the international break at the beginning of September. That will be better news for Milan who travel to Roma on matchday three.

The second meeting between the pair will arrive in gameweek 33 on the weekend of 20 April. This time Milan will play hosts at the Giuseppe Meazza, with the game potentially having huge ramifications in Serie A heading into the final weeks of the season, albeit depending on both sides’ performances up to that point.

Of course, there is always a chance Inter and Milan will face off against each other in the Coppa Italia or Champions League, although the former is more likely.

Last season was jam-packed with derby action in Milan, with the two clubs meeting a surprising five times.

Inter were firmly in control of the bragging rights, winning four of the five encounters, despite that fact that Milan won the opening derby of the season 3-2. An exquisite performance from Rafael Leao was the main difference between the sides on the day, but things would only go downhill from there for Milan.

Simone Inzaghi’s side would go onto win the next four without even conceding a goal and netting seven themselves. The first defeat for Stefano Pioli came in the Supercoppa Italiana in the form of a 3-0 humbling, but the most significant defeats were in the Champions League semi-final. I Nerazzurri won the first leg 2-0 following a brace in the first 11 minutes of play and eked out a 1-0 win in the second leg.

There has been a staggering 221 matches between these old foes, with Inter, much like last season, coming out on top overall.

I Nerazzurri have won 83 to Milan’s 71, while 67 have ended in draws. Remarkably, Milan have won just four of the last 20 meetings, only three of which came in 90 minutes. Andriy Shevchenko remains the top goalscorer in the fixture with 14, but Lautaro Martinez may soon catch the Ukrainian up considering he already has eight in the Derby della Madonnina.
