Where Mohamed Salah ranks among Merseyside derby scorers

Death, taxes and Mohamed Salah scoring decisive goals for Liverpool.

The majestic winger was at it again this weekend, bagging himself a second-half brace during the Reds’ 2-0 Merseyside derby victory against Everton. The first was an emphatic penalty, the second a cool finish at the end of a blistering counter-attack.

Salah’s tally already sits at eight goals and four assists after 11 appearances for Liverpool this season, with the inevitable Egyptian continuing to be the difference maker for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Toffees know of Salah’s prowess all too well and suffered at the hands of the 31-year-old again this Saturday. The visiting Everton supporters in the corner of the Anfield Road stand will have been cursing Liverpool’s record Premier League goalscorer, who seldom shows the blue half of Merseyside much mercy.

Let’s take a look at just how prolific Salah has been in the Merseyside derby in comparison to the great goalscorers that have graced the fixture in the past.

Salah‘s latest exploits in the Merseyside derby are hardly surprising. Not just because of the former Roma man’s excellence, but because he loves facing Everton.

The right-winger’s brace at Anfield this Saturday took his derby day tally to seven in ten encounters with the Toffees. Salah also netted a double at Goodison Park during the 2021/22 season; two fine goals in a convincing 4-1 Liverpool win.

Salah found the back of the net in his Merseyside derby debut back in 2017 too during a 1-1 draw at Goodison, while having struck in a 2-2 tie with Everton back in 2020.

The Egyptian has now found the net in successive derbies for the first time having scored in a 2-0 Anfield win last season and Salah will be aiming to make that three in a row later this season.

Salah’s recent brace has seen him leapfrog a few famous faces in the all-time Merseyside derby rankings, taking him equal fourth alongside Everton‘s Graeme Sharp and Peter Beardsley, who represented both sides in this fixture.

Two of those that Salah has now surpassed are Liverpool icons in the derby – Robbie Fowler and Divock Origi. Both have netted six, with the latter having produced some famous moments in recent clashes.

A strike in the second derby of the 2023/24 season for Salah would see him go level with Steven Gerrard in third place on eight goals, while another brace would mean he leapfrogged the former Liverpool number eight.

However, even if he played for another decade, there is little chance that Salah would catch the top two.

In second is legendary Toffees forward Dixie Dean with an astonishing 19 goals in Merseyside matches, just under 5% of the striker’s record 383 goals for Everton.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s own record goalscorer Ian Rush has an even more impressive tally in this fixture, netting 25 times for the Reds. That included four goals in FA Cup finals and marks an impressive haul that is unlikely to ever be topped.
