Have Man City won the UEFA Super Cup before?

Manchester City ascended to the pinnacle of club football in 2022/23 as they became just the second English team to win the illustrious treble.

A rampant conclusion to 2022/23 ensured City beat out Arsenal to the Premier League title, while Ilkay Gundogan’s heroics downed Manchester United in the first-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final. They were far from their best in Istanbul as they faced Inter with Europe’s ultimate prize on the line, but Rodri’s right boot thrust Pep Guardiola’s side into the record books.

City’s triumph in the Champions League final means they’ll be competing in the UEFA Super Cup against perennial Europa League victors Sevilla on Wednesday night. While the Spanish side are participating in their seventh Super Cup since 2006, City are novices in this annual encounter.

City have never taken part in the UEFA Super Cup, let alone won it.

The Super Cup has been competed annually between the winners of the Champions League/European Cup and Europa League/UEFA Cup since 1974. While City have been a supreme force for a decade now, they’ve only lifted the Champions League once and have never won the Europa League.

Rodri’s strike against Inter not only secured City the treble, but also the club’s first major European honour since 1969/70 when they lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

While City haven’t tasted success in this competition, five other English clubs have. Liverpool are four-time winners, Chelsea have won it twice, while Man Utd, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are each one-time victors.

Guardiola will be taking charge of his first UEFA Super Cup as City boss, but this isn’t his first rodeo in the competition. The Spaniard claimed victory back when this contest was a two-legged affair as a player in 1992 when Barcelona beat Werder Bremen 3-2 on aggregate.

He’s had more success as a manager, lifting the trophy three times with two different clubs. His all-conquering Barcelona sides beat Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto in 2009 and 2011 respectively. After moving to Bayern, Guardiola quickly lifted his first piece of silverware as the Germans sunk Chelsea on penalties.
